Elk most commonly bugle during mating season, the elf "rut", in the Fall. Bugling ramps up as early as late August and wraps up as late as the beginning of November. Bugling is a way that the male elk asserts his dominance, claims stake to territory, and wins the affection of female elk. Male elks, called bulls, compete for females, called cows, by ramming their antlers together and bugling loudly. These unique wails can most commonly be heard at dusk until dawn.
